Pandemic H1N1 Influenza 2009

On July 11, 2009 the World Health Organization raised their pandemic alert to Phase 6 confirming that a global pandemic caused by novel influenza A (H1N1) is underway.

Pandemic influenza continues to occur in Oregon and Lane County, and public health officials expect that many more people will become ill this fall and winter.  Supplies of H1N1 vaccine are limited and currently available only to target groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control.

The University of Oregon continues to actively prepare for and respond to the influenza pandemic . Click here for a summary of the University's planning assumptions and response activities for the coming academic year.

Protect yourself and others from pandemic influenza:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner containing at least 60% alcohol
  • Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue. Discard used tissues in a trash container. If a tissue is not available use your elbow, shoulder or upper sleeve rather than your hand. Click here to view a cough etiquette video.
  • Stay home from work or school for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone if you are ill with influenza-like symptoms.
  • Avoid close contact (within 6 feet) with sick persons if possible.
  • Seek emergency medical care immediately if you or a person you are caring for develops warning signs of more severe infection.
  • Call your health care provider if you have a condition which places you at higher risk for complications of pandemic influenza and:
    • You are sick with influenza-like symptoms or
    • You live in close contact with a person who is sick with influenza-like symptoms
  • Get vaccinated for both seasonal influenza and pandemic H1N1 influenza when each vaccine becomes available. Public health officials expect both seasonal and pandemic H1N1 influenza to occur on campus this fall and winter.

University of Oregon Influenza Vaccination Clinics

H1N1 Flu Vaccine: The University Health Center receives limited supplies of H1N1 influenza vaccine from the Lane County Health Department. Due to the small amounts of vaccine available only UO students who meet CDC target group criteria can receive H1N1 vaccine at the Health Center.   Please go to the University Health Center website (http://healthcenter.uoregon.edu/)  or call their automated flu information line at 346-4444 to check on vaccine availability.

A number of other community vaccine partners also receive H1N1 vaccine from the Lane County Health Department. Faculty, staff and families wishing to receive the H1N1 vaccine are encouraged to check with these community partners on vaccine availability. Click here and scroll to the end of the document  for a list of community vaccine partners.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine: The Health Center. has administered its entire supply of seasonal flu vaccine, and there is no additional vaccine available at this time. The remaining scheduled faculty and staff flu vaccine clinics have been canceled. If the Health Center is able to obtain additional seasonal vaccine, the campus will be notified immediately.
