University Emergency Communication System

The University of Oregon places the security and safety of its students, employees and visitors as its highest priority. To keep you informed in emergency situations the University has developed a comprehensive emergency communication system. The purpose of the system is to keep students, faculty, and staff informed about critical campus safety issues.

The emergency communication system includes the following methods of communication:

UO Alert! - Text Notification System - The UO Alert! text notification system, provided by Intrado, will allow the University to send emergency text messages to students, faculty and staff through their personal cellular devices.

Smart Classroom Alerts - Several classrooms around campus are considered “smart classrooms” in that they have control panels that control all of the technology in the room from computers, projectors, televisions, DVD players, and the lights. The control panels in the rooms can display emergency alert information that can be used in conjunction with UO Alert! messages to make sure that faculty and students in classrooms can be alerted that a UO Alert! message has been sent. UO Homepage Alerts - The University of Oregon’s Office of Communications staff has the ability to post emergency alerts on the UO home page from any Internet-connected computer. This home page alert icon can be linked to additional details located on the Emergency/Current Issues section of the UO Web site.

E-Mail - The University of Oregon has the ability to send mass distribution emails to students, faculty and staff members with uoregon.edu email addresses.

Community Emergency Notification System (CENS) - Reverse 911 or CENS is used to automatically call residential and business telephones when there is need to report an emergency in a geographic area. This system is managed and launched by Central Lane Communications, not the University of Oregon.

Broadcast Voice Messages - The University of Oregon’s voicemail system can be utilized to send voicemail messages to all UO telephones on campus. (This system does not include landlines in residence halls.)

Campus Radio and Local Media - Local media includes the University of Oregon’s on-campus FM radio station (KWVA 88.1) as well as other local radio and television media outlets.

The goal is to communicate emergency information in many different ways to ensure that the most people receive notification as quickly as possible.
